Meet Camara Thomas

Meet Camara Thomas, a 2023 Illini Dads scholarship recipient. Camara was one of the 6 other students to be awarded this scholarship out of many qualified applicants. Read on to learn more about Camara and her experience at the University of Illinois with the Illini Dads.

Major/minor: Agricultural and Consumer Economics w/ a concentration in Consumer Economics; Minor in Spanish

Year of Graduation: 2023

Tell Us About Yourself: I am from Naperville, Illinois, and I have a large family—7 siblings. I love to travel, read and I even have my own blog: morethanawoman.cc and I am also starting my own non-profit for financial literacy in America!

What activities are you involved in at the University of Illinois?

I am a writer/editor for Her Campus, I volunteer through the U of I Extension as a Money Mentor, and I have volunteered as translator for Spanish and English for Garden Hill Elementary School.

What are you hoping to gain from an education at the University of Illinois?

From my education at the University of Illinois, I hope to gain lifelong relationships with the school and alumni so that I can pay it forward when my time comes.

What has been your favorite experience so far at the University of Illinois?

My favorite experience so far at the University of Illinois was when I received the opportunity to travel to Silicon Valley for the Entrepreneurship Workshop through the TEC.

What are your plans for the future?

For the future, I hope to take my writing to the next level and eventually publish books about contemporary feminism. In addition to this, I would love for my non-profit organization to become nationally recognized.

Why did you decide to apply for the Illini Dads scholarship?

I applied for the Illini Dads scholarship because the value of fatherhood in relation to the support of education is important, and I thought it was amazing that this was offered.

How did the scholarship benefit you? Were there any specific areas that it helped?

This scholarship benefitted me because this year, I did not have to take out any student loans for my education.

If you would like to learn more, click here. Applications for 2022-2023 scholarships are accepted between June 1st and November 21st. The Illini Dads is a nonprofit organization that donates lots of its funds towards banquets, grands, and activities that benefit the students, alumni and parents. They have gifted hundreds of thousands of dollars towards scholarships and grants to help students achieve their goals at the University of Illinois.
